Mangosteen: Queen of Fruits

Queen of Fruits
Sensational flavor and centuries-old health properties. It's no wonder that the people of Southeast Asia treasure the mangosteen as the "Queen of Fruits."

If you haven't heard of mangosteen before now, you're not alone. The fruit is virtually unknown in the temperate zones of North America and Europe.

Found primarily in Southeast-Asia, the mangosteen fruit (Garcinia mangostana) consists of purplish rind or skin, fleshy, succulent, most delicious pulp (four to eight segments) and seeds (one to five). Revered for its medicinal properties and prized for its delectable taste, it's no wonder that during harvest time, the mangosteen is by far the most popular and most expensive fruit at the markets.

The mangosteen, is one of the few fruits that do not need pesticides to keep bugs from infesting its orchards. With limitations to tropical zones with abundant rainfall, the Mangosteen tree takes 10 years to mature and bear fruit. Trees that have reached full maturity can be as tall as 80 feet, and can produce thousands of individual fruits each year.

It is said that Queen Victoria (mid 1800's) offered knighthood to anyone who could bring her a sampling of the delicious mangosteen, her favorite fruit.

The mangosteen fruit was so prized by the early inhabitants of Southeast Asia for its enticing flavor, that traditional healers laid a trail of history in folk medicine. For centuries, these traditional healers have used the mangosteen to help fight dysentery, diarrhea and urinary tract infections and for topical treatment of eczema and other skin disorders. The pericarp has also been used to control fever and ward off infections of every kind.*
